Written Voters' Pamphlet Statement Submitted by Candidate
I have a straightforward approach to public service: listen, lead, and focus on results.
These skills were developed over a lifetime as a teacher, mother and grandmother, small business owner and neighborhood public safety advocate.
As your councilmember I am focused and responsive -- I take charge on big issues and work hard to solve constituent concerns.
My record reflects the mainstream values of our city, and I'm excited to continue serving the people of Seattle:
BETTER TRANSPORTATION: Even in tough economic times I've assured funding basics like maintaining streets and bridges. I've fought for our share of money for priorities like the Viaduct and light rail.
I will make the viaduct replacement and transportation improvements my primary focus for the next four years -- nothing is more important for our economy and quality of life.
EFFICIENT TRANSIT: Seattle needs integrated transit solutions to move people, reduce traffic and protect air quality. I've helped make sure light rail serves our neighborhoods -- and I'll work to extend the line to Northgate.
I was the first council member to demand that the Monorail Board develop a cost-effective solution or end the tax, and will continue to demand accountability.
NEIGHBORHOOD AND PUBLIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS: I've voted to fund neighborhood police, voted against closing fire stations, and helped small business owners and community groups improve our neighborhood commercial districts.
NEW PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS: I led council review for the Pro-Parks levy investing millions in new and improved parks and playgrounds, restoring forest and salmon habitat, and providing off-leash areas and P-Patches.
ASSISTING SENIORS AND VULNERABLE: When Enron created a rate crisis at City Light, I worked to make sure low-income families and seniors got a break. As Budget Chair I restored funding for human services and health clinics.
HELPING SCHOOLS: I'll expand results-driven partnerships with our schoolsbuilding on the legacy I helped create through the original Families and Education Levy.
NEW JOBS AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING: I'll continue to support progressive policies that promote job growth and affordable housing while protecting residential neighborhoods.
